Nine months of captivity in the hands of a maniac and now out to be a confident young analyst with ABC News to deal with child abduction and missing people. That summarizes the history of Elizabeth Smart who was abducted by Brian David Mitchell when she was just 14 years.
Elizabeth was apparently abducted from her own home right in front the eyes of her younger sister in the wee hours of morning of June 5 2002. She had to undergo immense mental and physical torture in the hands of Mitchell. After a massive man hunt for over a nine months Elizabeth was finally discovered by the salt lake police.
During her captive days Mitchell had allegedly claimed to marry her in a private religious ceremony and had raped her several times and threatened to kill her if she ever tried to escape. It is astonishing to note that Mitchell’s wife too was a complete support to all her husband’s activities.
Mitchell was finally sentenced to life imprisonment at the age of 56 after such a long ordeal for the Smart family.
Today nine years later Elizabeth has blossomed into a strong confident woman and is determined to fight for people like her. She feels she would personally understand the emotions of the family of people who either go missing or have been kidnapped as she was once herself in such a situation.
