In 2002, Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped by fifty-seven year old Brian David Mitchell and had repeatedly raped her while holding her captive for 9 months, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a federal judge on May 25. Smart had been kidnapped when she was only 9 years old. Smart was in Mitchell’s hell for nearly nine months and was saved when she was walking with the kidnapper on a street in Salt Lake City on March 12, 2003. Apart from kidnapping her and torturing her physically, he forced her to view pornography, drink alcohol and watch him having sex with his Wanda Barzee.
At the trail, the defense attorneys spoke on behalf of Mitchell saying he is mentally abnormal and his action was due to delusional beliefs. Elizabeth Smart stood at the trail facing Mitchell confidently and showed all her frustration against Mitchell though being very much well behaved at the court premises. That’s the girl power!! Really appreciable..!!
Smart still has a small amount of regret in her heart about whatever happened in those 9 months; the 9 months of her life she has lost. All about the kidnapping disclosed in the court that Smart was snatched from her bedroom on June 5, 2002 by Mitchell and when she woke up the next morning a jagged knife was close to her throat and she was forced to wear in white, religious robes and admit she is his wife. Wande Barzee has been punished for her role in the kidnapping for a 15-year sentence in a federal prison hospital.
According to the New York forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Welner concluded that Mitchell was only taking the aid of the reason called mental disorder to avoid prosecution or in technical terms said “malingering”.
