The problems caused by terrorists never seem to end. We hear about a bomb blast or a suicide attack in some part of the world almost every day. The people in Pakistan and Afghanistan have been the worst affected in this regard. The recent attack on the Afghan army base by the Taliban stands as a testimony to this fact. The attack comes a day after the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Kunduz. She had come to the city to boost the morale of the German soldiers deployed in the region.
The attackers have deliberately targeted a highly secure region right in the middle of the city. Four suicide bombers have carried out this brazen assault. The place of attack is a recruitment center. It is located around 100 meters from the police chief’s office. There are also several important government buildings around the recruitment center. Five soldiers and three policemen were killed during the blast. Three militants were also killed in the gun battle that followed. 20 troops were injured and around 100 civilians were trapped inside the building which the local troops had surrounded.
Taliban spokesman Zaibullah Mujahid said that the intention of her trip was to provide confidence and self-esteem to her soldiers, but the continuous attack on the soldiers have made their hearts week. The Afghan President, Hamid Karzai has termed the attacks as “criminal” and that the attacks have been carried out by “enemies of the people of Afghanistan.” Will the world remain as a mute spectator to such acts of terrorism? It still remains to be seen.
