Facebook is all set to unseat Google and be the ruler of the web world. The biggest social network of the world, Facebook unveils several products at its developer conference F8. With these products, the Facebook users and their friends will be placed at the central position on the web.
Facebook has over 400 million active users and every user has 130 friends on an average. Another notable thing is that 70% of the Facebook users are outside the US.
One of the important products launched was the open graph protocol which allowed the publishers to tag content by type. A ‘Like’ button was also announced that the partner sites will be allowed to put on their web page. With this button, the users will be able to indicate what they like on a site, whether they are photographs, music, clothes or news items. The websites will be able to use these individual preferences for making more personalized experience for the users.
Facebook said that now, the users will be able to see a web page that caters to their own individual tastes. These launches will also help the businesses to prosper as when they know their target users, they will be able to publish their updates directly to them, thus getting more chances to increase their sales. Some sites that have already adopted the ‘Like’ button include CNN, IMDb.com, Levi’s and ESPN.
Levi’s is going to integrate this function on its e-commerce site and will also build a ‘friend’ store button where the Facebook users will be able to see the favorite products of their friends.
Elliot Schrage, the vice president of Facebook for public policy and communications, said that nothing has been released that will change the privacy protections of the users. The launches are made to provide new opportunities to the users to have a more social experience over the web.
