The Lite site of Facebook aimed at users who had poor or slow Internet connections, and it has finally been shut down only after 7 months.

A note was poted on the fan page of Facebook, on which users of the Lite site were thanked. The note also said that the Facebook “learned a lot from the test of a slimmed-down site”. Ray Valdes from Gartner Research said that Lite site missed a lot of the real Facebook experience, especially the monetisable parts.

Mr Valdes told the BBC news that the decision to shut down the Lite site was taken also because the performance has been improved sufficiently and things now run much better. Because of this, they no longer need such back-up approach for covering low performance situations.

ReadWriteWeb.com, a technology blog, described the Lite site as a “Twitter-like experience” of a microblogging service, as it offered fewer features than the main Facebook site. Users of Facebook Lite could only write on the walls, post videos and photos, view events and browse profiles of other people. The site had no applications for the special boxes.

Mike Melanson from ReadWriteWeb.com says that Facebook Lite was like as if you are using ad block on its own site. Facebook announced the change on its own profile page and provided some details about why it is closing down the Facebook Lite site.

Nick O’Neil from AllFacebook.com said that the product was not very popular among the users and not many people were using it. Its loss will not be realized for long.

On the other hand, some commentators have posted on Mashable.com that they were using Facebook Lite because it was not locked in their officers and it proved to be a good support for the low bandwidth nations.
